Your starter guide to goal-getting personas

Goal-getting personas describe our natural habits we fall into when we're pursuing a goal, project, or dream. I've identified these six personas based on the habits of dozens of previous clients, friends, peers, and myself.

Identifying and understanding our goal-getting persona allows us to lean into our strengths and seek out support where we tend to get stuck along the way. Using this as a tool when you're pursuing a goal or project will allow you to get there faster than you normally would on your own.

What it all comes down to is momentum.

Momentum is typically one of those things that we talk about like the wind: it's fleeting and we can't control it. However, using this tool will allow you to create it yourself to get where you want to be faster. No more sitting around waiting for the perfect scenario to get started or waiting for that creative inspiration or zone of genius to hit you.

Something to keep in mind with these goal-getting personas is that we use the term persona not personality because our personas can change over time or may change depending on the area of life (work, finances, relationships, etc.).

There are six in total but I will highlight the three most common here. Yes, you can relate to more than one at a time!

The Dreamer: You are an idea-creating machine, always dreaming up new goals to pursue or new ideas to try along the way

    • What you're known for:

      • Coming up with new ideas

      • Belief in yourself and your ideas

      • Collaborating with others

    • Where you get stuck:

      • Day dreaming about new ideas

      • Shifting gears too often

      • Slow or sporadic progress

The Visionary: You know where you're headed and have a high-level view of how you'll get there

    • What you're known for

      • having a very specific goal that you're committed to

      • strategic thinking

      • long-term planning

    • Where you get stuck

      • you don't know where to start

      • analysis paralysis with too many options

      • too much high-level thinking, not enough day-to-day execution

The Planner: You take lots of small action steps and are very organized

    • What you're known for

      • being organized

      • crossing things off your to do list

      • having a clear plan for your goals

    • Where you get stuck

      • hard to prioritize your many goals

      • potentially take on too much leading to burnout

      • more action than what's really needed
