How the fear of being laid off led me to quitting my job during a pandemic

It probably started in June. I knew so many people who had lost their jobs or were being furloughed due to COVID.

When first talking with them, I immediately became scared. What if I lose my job too? What if there aren't any other new jobs out there for them or me?

Then an unexpected feeling hit me: jealousy

After sitting with that feeling, I realized that what I really wanted deep down was to not have a corporate job so I could pursue my side hustle full-time.

I realized there were so many people that needed my help right now because of all the lay-offs, furloughs, and people stuck working from home.

It hit me that it was actually the perfect time for me to go into business for myself because there were so many people in need of extra support right now. I never would have expected this fear to lead to a breakthrough as big as quitting my job on my own terms.

But what this experience really gave me is clarity.

Clarity in what I wanted my future to look like. Clarity on what it would take to get there.

So many of us have lost clarity this year due to so many unforeseen circumstances that are rocking our daily lives like a world-wide pandemic on top of social, economic, and political unrest.

Yes, 2020 has been a doozy. But that doesn't mean we need to wait for "a new normal" to figure out what we really want.

We can be with these new circumstances, be with our feelings, AND find the clarity we so crave...all on our own terms and on our own timeline.

Once you have complete clarity in what you want, it becomes inevitable that it will happen.

I'm not talking about clarity in just the goal - I'm talking about clarity in the goal, the vision, and that you are 100% IN to make it happen.

You will become so aligned with your future vision that all the other pieces will begin to align so that you know exactly what you need to do next to get there.

Each small step you take will be followed by more clarity in what you should do next.

A few questions to jumpstart your clarity about things you're passionate about:

  • What is something that I used to love to do as a kid that I haven't done in years?

  • If money weren't an issue, what would get me jumping out of bed in the morning to go do?

  • What kind of legacy do I want to leave behind for future generations?

My abbreviated answers to the above questions:

  • Drawing

  • Starting my own business

  • The inspiration that women can bust out of societal norms to do whatever the hell it is they're passionate about
